Exploring Indigenous Peoples and Global Engagement

With over 476 million individuals across approximately 90 countries and comprising around 5000 distinct groups, Indigenous Peoples represent a vital aspect of our world’s human diversity and cultural heritage. Despite their significance, they continue to face challenges and threats to their physical and cultural existence.

In this comprehensive course, we delve into the achievements, challenges, and potential of the dynamic interface between the Indigenous People’s movement—a powerful social force in our era—and the international community, with a special focus on the UN system. By centering on the themes articulated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007), we thoroughly examine how Indigenous Peoples have been actively contesting and reshaping norms, institutions, and global dialogues over the past half-century. Through their efforts, they have progressively decolonized and transformed international institutions while contributing to crucial contemporary debates, such as human rights, development, and law.
